So I’m deliberately censoring the name of the guy at the centre of this one because I do not want the google algorithm to associate my site with these things. Nonetheless, I did read this article which was passed to me by a friend of the author and I did thunk about it.
It’s quite upsetting that the main news story at the moment is about a man who did a lot of CSA and all the rich+powerful people who enabled that. I know survivors, and I don’t think the coverage is doing them justice. I think its really, really sad. I’m quite interested in the mechanics of how exactly he got away with it for so long? What were his friends getting out of it? The rich+famous did really seem to think he was their friend. To what extent is the current world order a reflection of his attempts to keep getting away with it? (esp. considering before this particular era, he was best known for being the biggest fraudster in history). I don’t know.
This particular article describes a woman’s two meetings with him in and they provide an interesting/horrifying insight into how his op’ actually worked day to day. It was a lot of meetings, a lot of making things happen for people he wanted to support. A lot of weirdness that was perhaps plausibly deniable from the surface.
I don’t really want to write more about it, other than to say this article illuminated for me the mechanics of how you actually end up with a network like he ended up, and how we got to where we are today. It’s all interpersonal sex+power dynamics. As usual :(. May we all live to see a better age. The author seems interesting, so I read a few of her other pieces next.
