In a vacant lot in urban Texas, herons build giant nests. That’s very cool.

Apparently this isn’t actually that rare. This is an article about a book called “A Natural History of Empty Lots” which sounsd really cool!! Urban naturalist.

Tendency to imagine that nature is somewhere out there. But for some species, urban areas are all they have left.

I guess I’m very lucky to live in a) the UK and b) not in a super urban area. Well, UK farmland/areas around it are often ecological catastrophes.

Ways to see this nature in urban areas: - go offroad, under overpasses, empty lots, creek watersheds, marshes, public rights of way - explore at dawn and dusk, when wildlife is most active, creeks are very good - make your space around you a little greener - chill, don’t worry about the names of things, just go and sit and be still and you will be amazed by what you see

Second half of book has musings on making a home that’s a little easier on the environment. Letting plants go to seed, growing polinator plants, replacing your lawn with wildflowers.

“unofficial public places”

I need to get off-road around where I live and try and find some “wilderness”. There’s that place near redacted but that wasn’t really much.
